What is this?

Welcome~! This is a personal website set up to be an archive of my ongoing ClanGen comic, PhoenixClan!

What is ClanGen?

ClanGen is a Warrior Cats fangame made by a collaborative team! It's a passion project, so definitely support the developers however you can!

The basic premise is that you get to have your own clan with randomly generated cats, and various events occur to those cats! In my opinion it is an excellent resource for brainstorming concepts for your own personal warrior cats stories.

What is Warrior Cats?

Warrior Cats (also known simply as Warriors), is a series of novels, written by a collection of authors working under the pseudonym Erin Hunter, about feral cats living in a structured society in the wilderness.

If you are interested in my comic, I would recommend getting familiar with the books, but if you have no interest in that but still want to read my comic, here's some basic information to keep in mind:

-> Clan cats typically live in four or five separate groups of cats (individually named clans) all with different names and abilities mostly based on their territories. The clans featured in the book series are ThunderClan, RiverClan, ShadowClan, WindClan, and SkyClan. The only clan focused on in PhoenixClan is the titular clan, as they exist in a territory where only scattered rogues and loners enter.

-> In addition to the living clans, the cats also believe that their ancestors watch over them living in a universal clan in the stars, fittingly named StarClan. All dead clan cats go there, unless they have done some great evil, in which case they enter The Dark Forest, a dark inverse of the warm and comforting StarClan.

-> Clan cats have a strict naming structure. Typically, a clan cat's name is consisting of a prefix, usually describing something about their physical appearance, and a suffix, which tells everyone what level of training or development the cat is at. Kittens have the suffix -kit; Apprentices have the suffix -paw; as an adult, cats will have unique suffixes unless they become the leader of the clan, in which case they will take on the suffix -star.

-> Clans consist of a leader, who is bestowed nine lives by StarClan in a ceremony and given the suffix -star; medicine cats, who work as doctors and commune with StarClan; and warriors, who tend to do the rest of the hunting, patrolling the territories, and miscellaneous chores.

-> Clan cats follow a strict code, known as the warrior code, that tells them much of the way things should be within the clans. This includes rules like not eating prey you have caught as it must be brought back to camp and added to the fresh-kill pile; you must not ever trespass on or hunt on another clan's territory; clan cats of a different clan cannot be too friendly with you as it will seem like your loyalty to your own clan is weak; medicine cats cannot have a mate or kits as they will become biased against cats they are unrelated to; no warrior can ignore a kit in distress or allow it to come to harm, etc. The warrior code is frequently debated and fought over within the clans.

How many Warrior Cats concepts are present in this comic?

The naming structure and a handful of beliefs from the clans are relevant to the story; however, since this clan is so isolated from all other clans, the series will also play with and delve into non-canon beliefs that cats in the mountains believe. While they still largely live in a clan structure, they are much more relaxed than canon clans and do not always strictly follow every rule of the warrior code.

When was this comic started?

Originally, I started working on this in December of 2023. This is also why the art style consistently changes throughout the comic; I have been working on this on and off through different art programs, different drawing devices, and different places.

How long will this comic go on?

For as long as I keep enjoying working on it! I have the ending of the story mostly mapped out, have played through all of the events I want to depict; however I have only organized a handful of those events so far. At time of writing, Arc 1 and 2 are all planned out, and I am working on scripting out Arc 3. However, if things change as I work on them, I am happy to change what I have made so far.

Please be aware that things such as real life circumstances and workloads on other projects may cause the occasional hiatus or slow progress. This is a passion project that I am not being paid to create, so I am just using my free time to work on this.

Will disturbing things happen in this comic?

Absolutely. In the past, I was nervous to say outright that dark or disturbing subject matter would be present in this comic. This is mostly because I began posting my work on Tumblr, and like all social media the audience there can be... touchy.

However, my writing spark has been ignited most when I can engage with the subject matter I want to regardless of what others think or feel. The creative process is easier when you don't care what others thing and refuse to muzzle yourself, who knew? lol

There will be the usual dark events you might see in a ClanGen comic; blood, violence and death; however, there will also be themes of abuse, in various forms. If this is too upsetting for you to see, then I suggest reading a different comic. Maybe whenever I get to my other comic I can suggest that one; there's no abuse in that one, but still plenty of violence. lol
